Large vs. small ships
In addition to choosing the right route, the size of the ship should not be neglected. Below are various aspects that need to be taken into account.
Large ships (>3000pax)
NCL currently (2024) has nine ships in service with over 3,000 passengers. The range of leisure activities available on these ships is much more varied than on the smaller ones. The selection of specialty restaurants usually doesn't differ. Due to the large number of passengers, the pool deck can become very crowded and finding a lounger is more difficult than on smaller ships. The newer and larger ships (except Epic) offer an ocean walk on deck 8 with seating and a fantastic view all around the ship. The new Prima class (Prima, Viva and Aqua from 2025) offer a completely new experience, a second pool deck, so to speak. Due to their smaller age, the larger ships are also more modernly furnished, designed and equipped with more clubs and bars. Levity Comedy Club, Cavern Club, Sid Normans Pourhouse are just a few examples. Of course, there are also more people who want to be entertained by the entire entertainment offering. Larger ships are more likely to be found on standard routes with large ports. One thing is certain: you'll never get bored, but you'll rarely find a place alone in peace on deck.
Small ships (<3000pax)
Norwegian Cruise Line has ten of the smaller and mostly older ships (built before 2010), the oldest of which dates back to 1998. These ships have all been overhauled at least once. They offer a family atmosphere and can call at smaller and more special ports. The ratio of space on the pool deck to the number of passengers is so good that you can almost always find a lounger. The leisure activities available both below and on deck are limited. Bars and restaurants are by no means neglected and there are enough of them. The smaller ships are furnished and constructed in the older style. One might say old-fashioned, but not antiquated. Personally, I find it quite pleasant to be on the road with fewer people and a little more relaxed. If you're looking for a lot of action and long nights of partying, you're better off on a larger ship. Things are a little quieter and more relaxed here, but by no means boring. Shows, band performances and pool games can of course also be found here.
